A Serious Allegation of Police Misconduct in Lagos
A recent case involving a property owner in Lagos has raised concerns about the conduct of police officers and their adherence to legal procedures. Engineer Olufemi Fasehun, a resident of Lagos, has formally accused members of the Nigeria Police Force of professional misconduct, specifically targeting the Monitoring Unit of Zone 2 Command.
According to the allegations, Fasehun claims that on June 4, 5, and 20, 2025, a team led by CSP Taofiq Sanni, the Officer-in-Charge of the Monitoring Unit, unlawfully entered his property located at No. 10, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos. The incident reportedly involved criminal trespass, unlawful arrest, and the illegal sealing of his business premises, Paradox Restaurant.
Fasehun’s legal representatives, Goldrush Partners, have stated that their client is the rightful owner of the property, supported by a registered deed of indenture, survey plan, and valid court judgment. Despite this, they claim that he and a tenant were arrested, and the premises were sealed off, resulting in dehumanizing treatment.
The petition highlights that the police action was based on a contested interlocutory order from Suit No. ID/11239LMW/2021 (Olufemi Fasehun v. Cletus Nwagwu & Ors). This order required all parties to maintain the status quo. Fasehun’s legal team insists that he complied with the order and submitted an affidavit confirming this.
However, the petition alleges that instead of following proper contempt proceedings through Forms 48 and 49, the complainants manipulated the police into acting unilaterally against Fasehun. The Monitoring Unit is accused of acting as agents of the complainants, disregarding Fasehun’s documentation and breaching civil court processes.
Additionally, the legal team claims that the complainants presented a falsified court document as a “Supreme Court Judgement” to justify previous police actions. There are also allegations that CSP Sanni threatened to arraign Fasehun in court on July 1, 2025, in an attempt to “satisfy the complainants,” despite the matter being sub judice before Hon. Justice Oshoala of the Ikeja High Court.
These actions, according to the petition, have caused significant economic loss and psychological trauma to Fasehun. They also raise serious concerns about the integrity of the Nigerian legal system. The petition states that it is clear that the Zonal Monitoring Unit officers have deviated from the lawful mandate of the Police Force.
Fasehun’s legal team is calling for the immediate intervention of the Inspector-General of Police. They are urging a full-scale investigation into the alleged misconduct and demanding the protection of their client’s constitutional rights.
Efforts to reach the Zone 2 Command for comment were unsuccessful as of press time. The case has sparked a broader conversation about the need for accountability and transparency within the Nigerian police force. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding legal procedures and respecting the rights of individuals, even in the face of legal disputes.
