Vlogger’s death at Scots Borders home sparks shock after false West Bank claims

Tragedy Strikes as Travel Vlogger Passes Away in Scottish Borders

A beloved travel vlogger, Emma Winters, has passed away at a property in the Scottish Borders. The news came as false reports circulated online claiming she had been killed in the West Bank. Emma, who was 57 years old, was found deceased at a property on Renwick Terrace in Hawick around 10am on Friday, July 11. Her next of kin have been informed of her passing.

The death has sent shockwaves through her community and online followers, many of whom were unaware of the real cause of her passing. Earlier in the day, misleading information about her death surfaced on social media platforms, including TikTok. This misinformation led to widespread confusion and concern among her friends and fans.

Emma, originally from Hawick, had moved to the United States 22 years ago. She had recently been traveling alone in Palestine, where she shared her experiences on her YouTube channel, “Wandering Emma.” In her videos, she described the “horrors of Gaza” and highlighted the challenges faced by civilians in the region. Her recent posts focused on the West Bank, where she referred to Hebron as an “Apartheid City,” sharing stories of the people living there.

Her social media activity ceased eight days ago, which led to the spread of false news about her death. Her family members—Steve, Alice, and Charlotte Winters, believed to be her husband and daughters—changed their profile pictures to photos of her in tribute. Friends and followers flooded comment sections with heartfelt messages of condolence.

Kenzie Cortsen wrote: “I’m so sorry for your loss. Thinking about you guys.” Kathy Ann Sirico said: “I am so sorry for you and your girls’ loss.” Lisa Lizardi Lipedusi added: “I’m so incredibly sorry to see this post. My deepest condolences to you (Steve), Charlotte and Alice.”

Tributes also poured in from her hometown. Jordan Richardson shared: “Rest easy, Emma Witters. One of the craziest women I’ve met, but the nicest kindest soul ever. You will be a big miss to us all, my thoughts are with your family at this devastating time.” Callum Farries said: “Very sad news today of the passing of Emma Witters. A great human being who loved travelling and vlogging her travels and amazing stories to tell indeed. I don’t know the ins and outs, but fly high, darling.”

Emma, who had visited 44 countries, described herself as someone who loved adventures. She once wrote: “I love a challenge and pushing my limits as far as I can go. I love all the different cultures in the world and there are so so many that I have to experience for myself as nothing you read or see on TV is as accurate as actually being somewhere yourself and living it.”

She also emphasized her passion for off-the-beaten-path destinations. “I’m just up for trying anything, the more adventurous the better. I was never one for the main tourist destinations. Every travel adventure brings on a whole new meaning to my life, and I am truly humbled by the people I meet. I just want to show you all the world is not this big bad place and no matter the colour of our skins or the difference in culture, we are all the same.”

Ongoing Investigations

Police Scotland confirmed the incident, stating that officers were called to the property on Renwick Terrace in Hawick at 10am on Friday, July 11. A 57-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed, and inquiries are ongoing. At this time, there are no suspected suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for further review.
