A Global Opportunity for Kenyan Sports Journalism
Martin Moses, the Sports Editor at MG NEWS DAY.co.ke, has been chosen among 27 journalists from around the world to join the World Athletics Media Academy 2025. This prestigious program is designed to shape the future of athletics storytelling through journalism, photography, and broadcast commentary. It is organized in collaboration with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), a global organization that supports sports journalists worldwide.
Participants in the program will receive technical training, attend live events at the iconic National Stadium in Tokyo, and produce daily content under the guidance of experienced editors and veteran sportswriters. Martin, who leads the sports desk at MG NEWS DAY.co.ke, will represent Kenya in this international initiative. His involvement will culminate in his coverage of the World Athletics Championships, set to take place from 13th to 21st September 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
Martin’s selection reflects his dedication to insightful, people-centered sports storytelling. He believes that covering athletes’ journeys goes beyond reporting results. “It’s about telling stories of grit, resilience and hope,” he says. Being chosen to represent his country on this global stage is both humbling and motivating for him. “It reminds me why I started: to give athletes the recognition they deserve.”
World Athletics first recognized Martin’s work through the AIPS Sport Media Awards, an annual event that honors the best sports stories globally. Since 2023, Martin has submitted stories to the competition, and one of his entries was ranked 10th in Africa this year. This international recognition led to an invitation from World Athletics to join their new academy for young reporters.
Initially, 24 journalists were shortlisted in the journalism category. After a rigorous selection process involving tests and assignments in March and April, only 12 finalists were chosen. Martin was the sole African journalist in the final group. The process was intense, as World Athletics made it clear from the start that this is not a vacation. “They want us to grow, to be challenged and to step out of our comfort zones,” he shares. He is deeply grateful for the opportunity, especially at this stage of his career.
The 12 selected reporters are currently undergoing remote training in preparation for the event. They will travel to Tokyo for in-person training beginning on 7th September, before reporting live from the Championships.
Martin is no stranger to big stories. As an award-winning journalist, he has written over 800 sports articles, earning recognition for his deep knowledge of Kenyan and international athletics, as well as his ability to bring heart into every headline.
This global recognition is also a proud moment for MG NEWS DAY.co.ke. As Kenya’s leading digital news platform, the outlet has consistently focused on humanizing stories, spotlighting grassroots talent, and amplifying voices that often go unheard. Martin’s journey exemplifies the platform’s mission.
“This selection is not just about me,” he says. “It’s about showing young journalists that if you stay curious, stay ethical and keep showing up for your craft, people will notice.”
MG NEWS DAY.co.ke is incredibly proud to see one of its own stepping confidently onto the world stage. The platform is eager to see the stories Martin will bring back from Tokyo.
