Obi Confirms Fearless Travel Across Nigeria’s States

Peter Obi’s Response to Governor Okpebholo’s Remarks

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has responded to the comments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State. During a party event on July 18, 2025, Okpebholo suggested that Obi should obtain security clearance before visiting the South-South state. This statement was interpreted by many as a subtle warning, leading to strong reactions from Obi’s supporters.

The governor’s remarks were seen as an indirect threat, prompting anger among Nigerians, especially those who are part of Obi’s fan base, known as Obidients. These supporters emphasized that no harm should come to their leader. In response, Obi addressed the issue during a speech at Christ the King College (CKC) in Onitsha on July 24, 2025, where he presented a ₦50 million cheque to his alma mater.

Obi stated that he is not afraid to visit any part of the country, particularly when the purpose is to support causes that contribute to national development. The donation, which was a joint effort with other Old Boys of the school, aimed to improve educational facilities and learning conditions at CKC. He highlighted the importance of education, health, and poverty alleviation as key areas for national progress.

Disappointment Over Politicization of His Visit

Obi expressed disappointment that his recent trip to Benin had been politicized. He clarified that the visit was focused on supporting healthcare development in the state. “I went to Benin to invest in a better life for the people. If they have good doctors and nurses, life will be better for them,” he said. Obi urged the governor to complement efforts aimed at improving society.

He also spoke about the significance of the donation to CKC, describing it as a gesture of gratitude to the institution that shaped his values and those of others. “This school helped form the values I and many others still hold dear today — discipline, moral grounding, and academic excellence. Supporting it is a way of giving back,” he added.

Call for Alumni Support

As a 2027 presidential aspirant, Obi encouraged other alumni of CKC and other schools across the country to support their alma maters. He stressed that the responsibility of educational development should not fall solely on the government. The Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, received the donation on behalf of the school and praised Obi’s dedication to education and national development.

Master Ejike Ekene, the Senior Prefect of CKC, described Obi as a role model and inspirational figure to students. He expressed deep appreciation for the generous support provided by Obi and others.

Legacy of Christ the King College

Founded in 1932, CKC has produced notable alumni, including former Rivers State Governor Dr. Peter Odili, Obi, and his successor Willie Obiano. The school continues to play a vital role in shaping leaders and contributing to the nation’s development. Through initiatives like the donation to CKC, individuals like Obi are helping to ensure that future generations benefit from quality education and strong values.
