Ellen DeGeneres’ New Life in the UK and Future Ambitions
Ellen DeGeneres, the American comedian and television host, has expressed a strong interest in hosting a talk show in the United Kingdom after relocating from the United States. However, there are several factors she must consider before making such a move. At 67 years old, Ellen moved to Britain with her wife, Portia de Rossi, 52, in November of last year. The decision came after Donald Trump’s re-election, which prompted her to seek a new life in the UK.
While Ellen has kept a low profile since her move, she recently made her first public appearance in the UK. This took place during a conversation with Richard Bacon at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. During this event, she reflected on the bullying scandal that impacted her popular talk show in the US, which eventually led to its cancellation in 2022.
Ellen hosted over 3,000 episodes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show before its final episode in May 2022. The show faced significant backlash due to allegations of a toxic workplace environment, which led to a broader investigation. Despite the decline in viewership, Ellen has remained firm in her stance against the accusations, now expressing a desire to replicate her success in the UK.
However, she is uncertain whether the format of her previous show would work in the current media landscape. In quotes obtained by the BBC, she mentioned that people are more engaged with their phones than traditional television, as they are inundated with information and entertainment.
Ellen admitted that she does not have clear plans for her next career move but emphasized that she will approach future decisions carefully. She stated that she wants to have fun after feeling bored in recent months, no longer being in front of the bright lights and cameras.
Living in a sprawling Cotswolds mansion, Ellen previously spoke about being “cancelled” online when accused of being “mean” to staff behind the scenes. She described the accusations of toxicity as “orchestrated” and “misogynistic.” In her 2024 tour, she discussed the challenges of addressing these issues without sounding like a victim or complaining.
The accusations against Ellen gained widespread media attention when the complainants came forward in 2020. She was said to have enabled a “toxic” atmosphere, along with “racism, fear, and intimidation.” Other allegations included failing to address higher-ups sexually harassing female employees and directing “racist micro-aggressions and abuse” towards employees of colour. Additionally, some staff members were reportedly fired for taking medical and bereavement leave.
Following an internal probe into the show’s culture, three producers were sacked for alleged misconduct, and Ellen gave an on-air apology during her final show. Initially, she had vowed to retire from showbiz after fulfilling her contractual obligations, but she now admits that life in the UK is “just better.”
Ellen and Portia, who were present in the audience during the event, had originally planned to use their UK property as a “part-time house,” spending three or four months a year there. However, the outcome of the last US election influenced their decision to stay permanently. She recalled waking up to texts from friends with crying emojis after Trump’s victory, leading them to decide to remain in the UK.
Ellen and Portia first met at a party in 2000. In their first joint interview in 2009, Portia told Oprah Winfrey that she knew she loved Ellen the moment she laid eyes on her.
