Key Players Missing for Wallabies’ First Test Against the Lions
Joe Schmidt, the head coach of the Wallabies, has acknowledged that two key players, Rob Valetini and Will Skelton, could have been in action during the opening match of the British and Irish Lions series. However, both forwards are currently sidelined due to injuries, leaving a significant gap in the team’s lineup for the encounter in Brisbane this weekend.
Valetini and Skelton were absent from the previous Test against Fiji, which took place almost two weeks ago. Initially, Schmidt had hoped that both players would be fit in time for the Lions Tests. Unfortunately, their absence is now confirmed, with Schmidt emphasizing that it would have been too risky to include them in the first game.
‘You might end up worse off’
Schmidt explained his decision to leave out the pair, stating, “If it was the last game of the series, I think they would have been in the mix.” However, he added, “The risk you take if you put those guys out there and they’re not quite ready and you try to push them through, you might end up worse off.”
This development has created a challenging situation for the Wallabies, who are now missing two formidable forwards capable of competing against the Lions’ strength. Additionally, the team is without their first-choice fly-half, Noah Lolesio, who has been replaced by Tom Lynagh. This further complicates the team’s strategy as they prepare for the opening match of the series.
A Pragmatic Approach to the Challenge
Schmidt remains focused on maintaining a balanced approach, stating, “I’d be pretty pragmatic about that and I’d hope that the team are as well. We try not to base our whole game around any individual.” He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt and perform despite these setbacks.
“I’d like to think that we can still go out – probably sharing Tom Lynagh’s quiet confidence – and put a game together that at least can keep the British and Irish Lions pretty honest on the day,” he added.
Introducing a New Name to the Lineup
In the absence of Valetini, Schmidt made an unexpected selection by naming Nick Champion de Crespigny as the blindside flanker for his Test debut. Champion de Crespigny, described by back-row teammate Fraser McReight as “a psycho,” has had a strong season with the Western Force and has risen above other contenders such as Tom Hooper and Carlo Tizzano in the pecking order.
Schmidt provided insight into his decision, explaining, “We certainly knew a fair bit about Nick. I keep an eye on the Top 14. Having coached there many years ago, obviously Nick was playing for Castres and they’d been a high-performing team in the Top 14. So when he decided to come back, he was immediately on the radar.”
He continued, “Then he tended to just get a little bit closer as the Super Rugby season wound on. He’s got a good profile in the air, he’s quick in the air, he is really consistent around his tackle and tackle recovery, and really consistent around his ball carry and his support play. He’s a good package for us, we think, and we’re excited that he’s going to get an opportunity.”
Looking Ahead
With a mix of challenges and new opportunities, the Wallabies will need to rely on their depth and resilience as they face the formidable British and Irish Lions. The inclusion of Champion de Crespigny signals a bold move by Schmidt, one that could prove crucial in the coming matches. As the team prepares for the series, the focus will be on unity, strategy, and adapting to the circumstances at hand.
