Community Hub Vision for Swindon Town Centre
Swindon’s town centre is undergoing a transformation, with key investors aiming to convert a central shopping area into a vibrant “community hub.” FI Real Estate Management, a prominent commercial property company, has been at the forefront of this initiative. The firm owns several high-profile developments in the area, including The Parade and the Tri-Centre. Additionally, their portfolio includes the Brunel Shopping Centre, which recently played host to an exhibition showcasing the talents of A-Level students from New College Swindon.
The event was part of the annual textile festival called Threads, which takes place across various venues in Swindon. Organised by Artsite, an artist-led creative community group, the festival aims to celebrate and encourage creativity within the local community. As part of the event, textiles students were given a dedicated unit on the ground floor of the Brunel Shopping Centre to display their work from Monday, July 7 to Saturday, July 12.
Tim Knowles, founder and managing director of FI Real Estate Management, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration. He said, “At the Brunel Shopping Centre, we’re right in the heart of Swindon, and we take our role as a community hub seriously. We were thrilled to be able to work alongside New College Swindon and Artsite to host the Threads exhibition. As key investors in Swindon town centre, it’s vital that we continue to partner with local colleges, businesses and charities to showcase all that the area has to offer, to drive further growth for Swindon. It has been great to see the students’ work celebrated at the exhibition!”
Despite these positive developments, much of the shopping centre has been closed off to the public since the decision was made to shut the Arcade area of the Brunel in November 2024. When asked about plans to reopen the space, FI Real Estate Management was unable to provide specific details but mentioned that the closure was part of a broader strategy to “feed the footfall in certain areas.”
The company also confirmed that a proposal to build almost 300 flats on top of the Arcade had been “paused” to allow them to reassess whether their high-rise plans align with the wider vision for the town centre. Meanwhile, the Plaza section of the Brunel remains open and continues to serve as a home for a variety of local businesses and community events, such as the Threads festival.
Expanding the Festival Experience
The Threads Textiles Festival is running until Saturday, July 19 and features exhibitions and workshops designed to celebrate and encourage creativity within the local community. Sue Bardwell from Artsite highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “Threads Textiles Festival is now in its second year, and we hope to make it bigger and better. Our programme of events and workshops aims to bring the community together and celebrate the power of textiles as a creative, social and wellbeing outlet. Being able to collaborate with local venues is a crucial part of bringing the festival together, and we are pleased to be able to work with FI Real Estate Management on the exhibition.”
New College Swindon also shared its excitement about the partnership. A spokesperson added, “We’re delighted to be able to partner with Artsite and to have been offered a dedicated unit at The Brunel Shopping Centre to exhibit a selection of outstanding work from our Level 3 A Level and BTEC Textile & Fashion students. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the creativity flourishing in Swindon.”
The textiles course at the college offers students a wide range of opportunities to develop techniques in surface decoration, embellishment, garment and costume design, accessories, interiors, fine art textiles, printed and dyed fabrics, and digital textile techniques. Through this program, students are encouraged to explore and express their creativity while gaining practical skills in the field.
