Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourn for Third Day Amid Opposition Demands

Political Tensions Escalate in Indian Parliament

The Indian Parliament, comprising both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, witnessed a third consecutive day of adjournments on Wednesday. The opposition parties raised concerns over several critical issues, with a particular focus on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. This issue has become a focal point for discussions, as members from various opposition groups demanded that it be addressed.

Throughout the day, both Houses faced multiple adjournments, with sessions being called off at different times—first until 12 noon, then until 2 p.m., and finally for the rest of the day. The repeated interruptions have led to growing frustration among lawmakers and parliamentary officials.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his concern over the ongoing disruptions, urging opposition members to allow the House to function normally. He criticized the use of placards and banners within the chamber, stating that the House is meant for discussion and dialogue, not for political slogans. “The nation is watching your behavior and conduct,” he said. “I will have to take decisive action against members bringing banners. Maintain the decorum of the House.”

Despite Birla’s appeal, the opposition did not back down, leading to the adjournment of the session until 12 noon. Later, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, reiterated the need for constructive dialogue. He urged the opposition to refrain from protests and instead engage in meaningful discussions. “We have lost precious time in two days. Kindly allow the bill to be discussed,” he said. He also highlighted the lack of progress on key legislative matters, including discussions on the Scheduled Tribes of Goa.

Legislative Agenda and Opposition Concerns

During the session, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya introduced the ‘National Sports Governance Bill, 2025’ in the Lok Sabha, along with the National Anti-Doping Amendment Bill 2025. These bills aim to reform the sports governance framework and strengthen anti-doping regulations in the country. However, the opposition argued that these legislative efforts should not overshadow pressing national issues.

One of the major points of contention is the repeated claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor. Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not addressing these allegations. “How can the Prime Minister give a statement? Kya bolenge PM, ki Trump ne karwaya hai?” Gandhi questioned. He emphasized that the entire world is aware of Trump’s claims and that the government cannot ignore them.

Gandhi further pointed out that the issue extends beyond just the ceasefire. He highlighted concerns related to defense, defense manufacturing, and the broader implications of Operation Sindoor. “The condition is not normal; the entire nation knows,” he said. He also accused the government of failing to provide a clear response to these critical issues.

Criticism of Government Inaction

Congress member Jairam Ramesh echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the government for not setting firm dates for discussions on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. He noted that while President Trump has repeatedly claimed a ceasefire, the Indian Prime Minister has remained silent. “The Modi government continues in its refusal to give firm dates for a debate on Pahalgam-Sindoor in Parliament,” Ramesh stated. He added that the government has failed to commit to a reply from the Prime Minister during these debates.

Ramesh also accused the government of prioritizing travel abroad over addressing domestic challenges. “The Prime Minister is totally quiet—finding time only to travel abroad and to destabilise democratic institutions at home,” he wrote on social media.

These criticisms reflect deepening divisions within the political landscape, as opposition parties continue to push for transparency and accountability on key national issues. The ongoing adjournments and disputes highlight the challenges of maintaining productive parliamentary discourse in a highly polarized environment.
