National Sports Academy Plans Underway – Abbas

A New Vision for Nigerian Sports

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, recently made a significant announcement regarding the future of sports in Nigeria. During an event in Abuja, he revealed plans to establish a National Sports Academy aimed at identifying and nurturing the sporting talents of young Nigerians across the country. This initiative was unveiled during the distribution of sports equipment to Principal Officers and members of the House Committee on Sports, who will then deliver these resources to their respective constituencies.

Abbas emphasized the importance of focusing on grassroots sports development as a strategic approach to reviving Nigeria’s former glory in international sporting events. He highlighted that the budget includes a proposal to build a National Sports Academy equipped with both outdoor and indoor facilities for children of secondary school age. These students would be identified through grassroots competitions and admitted to continue their sports development.

“I believe that at the end of the day, this initiative will bring a lot of international stars that Nigeria will be proud of,” he stated. The speaker pointed out that the current state of Nigerian sports is concerning, especially after recent performances at the Olympic Games, where the country returned without any medals. He noted that it is unacceptable for a nation with over 200 million people to fail to secure any recognition on the global stage.

“Saint Lucia, with a population of less than 100,000 people, won a gold medal at the last Olympics, but Nigeria, with over 200 million people, came back with nothing. This is unacceptable,” he said. To address this issue, Abbas proposed discontinuing the current system where athletes are selected based on connections and instead returning to grassroots competitions to identify talent.

Building a Sustainable Sports Ecosystem

The Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadu, praised the Federal Government and the leadership of the National Assembly for significantly increasing the sports sector budget. From ₦29 billion in 2024, the budget has been raised to ₦113 billion in 2025, representing a 288% increase. Amadu emphasized the goal of building a sustainable sports ecosystem starting from the grassroots level, where champions are discovered, talents are nurtured, and characters are built.

“Investing in grassroots sports means investing in the dreams of our young people; sports have the power to transform lives, but for too long, focus has been on elite athletes. Today, we begin to change that narrative,” he said. He also described the sports equipment being distributed as symbols of opportunity, empowerment, and national progress.

Transforming Sports into an Economic Driver

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Shehu Dikko, stressed the need to shift Nigeria’s sports orientation from being competition-driven to development-driven. He outlined the vision of making sports a driver of the economy by creating two to three million jobs annually and generating foreign exchange. Dikko expressed the desire to position sports as an international asset that brings social life together and makes the country proud.

He mentioned that a bill aimed at restructuring the entire sports ecosystem in the country is currently under consideration. This proposed legislation seeks to create all the necessary agencies and development funds to support sports in Nigeria effectively.

Key Objectives of the Initiative

  • Grassroots Development: Focus on identifying and nurturing talent from the community level.
  • Infrastructure Investment: Establish a National Sports Academy with comprehensive facilities for young athletes.
  • Budget Increase: Significantly boost funding for the sports sector to ensure sustainability.
  • Economic Growth: Position sports as a key driver of economic development and job creation.
  • Policy Reform: Introduce legislative changes to restructure the sports ecosystem and ensure long-term success.

This new direction in Nigerian sports aims to not only restore the nation’s competitive edge but also to foster a culture of excellence and opportunity for the youth. By prioritizing grassroots development and investing in infrastructure and policy reform, Nigeria is taking a crucial step towards reclaiming its place on the global sports stage.
