Wolff: Russell and Antonelli Top Mercedes’ List Amid Verstappen Talks

Mercedes’ Focus on 2026 Driver Line-Up

Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff has emphasized that retaining current drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 season is his top priority. This statement comes amid ongoing discussions with Max Verstappen’s representatives, as the Dutch driver evaluates his future in Formula 1.

Over the past few weeks, it has been reported that Verstappen’s team has reached out to Wolff to discuss potential future plans. The reigning champion is currently under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but there are several escape clauses that could be triggered during the summer break or in the following year. These clauses add an element of uncertainty regarding Red Bull’s long-term competitiveness, especially considering the team’s recent challenges, such as losing key personnel and struggling to address weaknesses in its current car.

Red Bull is also venturing into uncharted territory in 2026 with its in-house power units, which introduces further questions about its ability to remain a title contender. However, these uncertainties are not unique to Red Bull, as all teams face similar challenges in the new era of Formula 1. As a result, it is more likely that Verstappen will wait and observe which teams make the strongest start before making any major decisions.

A Drama-Filled Silly Season

The situation has added an extra layer of drama to the already intense “silly season” in Formula 1. George Russell, who is currently under contract with Mercedes, is in a holding pattern as he seeks an extension to his deal. Meanwhile, rookie driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli needs to be officially confirmed for the 2026 season.

Wolff recently spoke to Austrian broadcaster ORF, where he reiterated his commitment to keeping both Russell and Antonelli for the upcoming season. He described this as the “absolute priority” and downplayed the possibility of any major surprises during the summer break.

“Discussions have been taking place over the last weeks and months, so they are all up to date,” Wolff said. “The direction of travel is definitely that we want to continue with George and Kimi. That is the absolute priority. But you can’t look past someone like Max and the plans he has for the future. We did that, but I don’t think there will be any big surprises.”

Rumours and Vacations

Wolff also addressed rumors that he and Verstappen met while on vacation during the three-week gap between the British and Belgian Grands Prix. Both spent time on the Italian island of Sardinia, leading to speculation about their interactions. Some fan accounts even created images suggesting that Wolff was boarding Verstappen’s private jet.

Wolff found the rumors amusing, noting that such photo collages were a new development. “What’s new is that people are doing photo collages with airplanes. We’ve never had that before,” he said. “But if you spend your holidays close to each other, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to work together in Formula 1. We have always gotten along well and by chance we like to spend our holidays at the same places.”

Future Possibilities

While Wolff’s comments suggest that Mercedes is focused on its current drivers, they do not rule out the possibility of a move for Verstappen in 2027 or beyond. This leaves room for intrigue regarding the exact terms of Russell’s contract renewal, as he is likely seeking a firm, long-term commitment from the team.

As the summer break approaches, all eyes will be on how the driver line-ups for the 2026 season are finalized. With the competitive landscape of Formula 1 constantly evolving, the coming months will be crucial in shaping the future of the sport.
