Ayush Mhatre Shines with a Century in Chelmsford
In a remarkable display of batting prowess, India under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre delivered a stunning performance during the red-ball leg of the tour to England. Following a challenging ODI series, Mhatre turned heads with a rapid century at Chelmsford, showcasing his ability to rise to the occasion when it matters most.
Mhatre scored 126 runs off just 80 balls, including 13 fours and six sixes, achieving a strike rate of over 157. His innings was crucial as India aimed to chase down a daunting target of 355 runs. However, rain intervened, resulting in a draw for India at 290/6. Wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu also contributed significantly with a quickfire 65 off 46 balls, featuring four boundaries and four sixes.
This century marked Mhatre’s third-fastest U19 Test ton, behind Vaibhav Suryavanshi (58 balls) and England legend Moeen Ali (56 balls). The performance highlighted his growing confidence and potential as a future star in Indian cricket.
Strong Start from India U19
India U19 opted to field first, setting the stage for a competitive encounter. Ekansh Singh led the charge with a magnificent 117 off 155 balls, scoring 14 fours and three sixes. Skipper Thomas Rew added a valuable 59 off 79 balls, with eight fours and a six. Naman Pushpak took four wickets for 76 runs, providing crucial support to the bowling attack.
England U19 managed to post a total of 309, thanks to strong contributions from their batsmen. In response, India struggled to match the required run rate, finishing at 279 all out. Mhatre played a vital role with an unbeaten 80 off 90 balls, while Vihaan Malhotra scored a quickfire 120 off 123 balls, featuring 19 fours and three sixes. Ralphie Albert was instrumental with a six-wicket haul, taking 6/53.
England’s Strong Second Innings
In the second innings, England U19 posted a formidable total of 324/5, with BJ Dawkins and Adam Thomas laying a solid foundation. Dawkins scored 136 off 184 balls, while Thomas contributed 91 off 132 balls. This set up a challenging target of 355 for India, who were eventually bowled out for 290/6.
Despite a lackluster ODI series, where Mhatre scored just 28 runs across five matches, he made a significant impact in the Test series. He amassed 340 runs in four innings at an average of 85.00, with a strike rate exceeding 103. His performances included two centuries and a fifty, proving his worth as a key player in the team.
Leadership and Growth
Mhatre’s leadership skills were evident throughout the series. Although he didn’t perform well with the bat in the ODIs, his captaincy helped India secure a 3-2 series win in a tightly contested five-match affair. His ability to inspire and guide the team has been a major factor in their success.
Mhatre’s journey has been impressive over the past few months. He stepped in as a replacement for an injured skipper, bringing a fresh energy and confidence to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting group. His performances in the IPL, where he scored 240 runs in seven matches, highlighted his potential as a T20 specialist.
A Rising Star
Mhatre has consistently performed across different formats. In nine first-class matches, he has accumulated 504 runs at an average of 31.50, with two centuries and a fifty. In seven List-A matches, he has scored 458 runs at an average of 65.42, with a strike rate of 135.50. His debut in professional T20 cricket with CSK marked a significant milestone in his career.
Mhatre’s journey has not only been about individual achievements but also about learning from some of the best in the game. He had the opportunity to share the locker room with Indian legends like MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin. Additionally, he met Indian ODI skipper Rohit Sharma before the series, receiving a signed bat as a token of encouragement.
With his consistent performances and leadership qualities, Ayush Mhatre is undoubtedly a name to watch in the world of cricket. His journey reflects determination, growth, and a deep passion for the game.
