Macron Announces France’s Recognition of Palestine, Enraging Israel

France Announces Recognition of Palestinian Statehood

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that his country will formally recognize the State of Palestine during a UN meeting in September. This move makes France the most powerful European nation to take such an action, signaling a significant shift in international relations and support for Palestinian statehood.

As of now, at least 142 countries have either recognized or plan to recognize Palestinian statehood, according to a tally by AFP. However, this decision faces strong opposition from Israel and the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized the move as “a reckless decision” that “only serves Hamas propaganda.” He added that it was “a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th,” referencing the attack by the Islamist militant group on Israel in 2023 that triggered the war in Gaza.

Since Israel launched its bombardment of Gaza nearly two years ago in response to the Hamas attacks, several countries have announced plans to recognize Palestinian statehood. Macron’s announcement has drawn immediate anger from Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that it “rewards terror” and poses an existential threat to Israel. Netanyahu claimed the decision “risks creating another Iranian proxy, just as Gaza became,” warning that it would serve as “a launch pad to annihilate Israel — not to live in peace beside it.”

On the other hand, senior Palestinian Authority official Hussein al-Sheikh welcomed the move, saying it “reflects France’s commitment to international law and its support for the Palestinian people’s rights to self-determination and the establishment of our independent state.” Hamas also praised Macron’s pledge, calling it a “positive step in the right direction toward doing justice to our oppressed Palestinian people and supporting their legitimate right to self-determination.” The group urged all countries, especially European nations and those that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine, to follow France’s lead.

Humanitarian Crisis and International Concerns

International concern is growing over the plight of more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the ongoing conflict has led to a dire humanitarian crisis and warnings of mass starvation. Israel has rejected accusations that it is responsible for the deepening hunger crisis in Gaza, which the World Health Organization has described as “man-made.” France has blamed the crisis on an Israeli “blockade.”

Macron emphasized that the “urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and rescue the civilian population.” He stated that the international community must finally build the State of Palestine, ensure its viability, and enable it to contribute to the security of all in the Middle East by accepting its demilitarization and fully recognizing Israel.

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinians expressed hope that other countries would follow France’s example. Mahmoud al-Ifranji called France’s pledge “a moral commitment” and a “political victory for the Palestinian people.” Another man, Nahed Abu Taima, said he hopes France’s decision will help lead to peace, believing that “this recognition will lead to the recognition of Palestine by a number of countries in Europe and the world.”

Path to Statehood

Macron plans to make the announcement at the UN General Assembly in September. While France will be the most significant European power to recognize a Palestinian state, other nations have hinted at similar actions. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced he would hold a call with counterparts in Germany and France to discuss efforts to stop the fighting, adding that a ceasefire would “put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state.”

Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia have already recognized Palestinian statehood following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, along with several other non-European countries. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, whose country already recognizes Palestinian statehood, welcomed Macron’s announcement. He stated that “together, we must protect what Netanyahu is trying to destroy. The two-state solution is the only solution.”

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry hailed Macron’s announcement as “historic” and urged other countries to follow suit. Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Harris called France’s move “the only lasting basis for peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”

Ongoing Conflict and Casualties

The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of 59,587 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory. Meanwhile, Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel led to the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
