President Bola Tinubu has commended the players and staff of the Super Falcons after their outstanding performance in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, securing a landmark tenth championship.
The Nigerian senior women’s football squad made history in Rabat on Saturday, July 26, 2025, by pulling off an amazing comeback from a two-goal disadvantage in the first half to beat the host nation, Morocco, with a final score of 3-2.
Chatting with the team through a video call following the win,President Tinubuexpressed admiration for the athletes, trainers, and the team’s administration for bringing honor to the nation.
He observed that the team’s success boosted the country’s morale, with Nigerians expressing gratitude and pride for their accomplishments, vowing to honor them when they come back to the nation.

Tinubu also conveyed special greetings to the team’s captain and Atletico Madrid forward,Rasheedat Ajibade, and acknowledged the bravery ofEsther Okoronkwofor taking charge at a critical moment to score the penalty that ignited the comeback victory, characterizing the action as brave.
I am deeply proud of you. The whole country is proud of you. You have boosted our morale, and we are generally proud of you, as we are all very pleased. You will be honored, and I extend my congratulations to all the coaches and the team’s management, including the ministers and officials.
“And my warmest greetings to Rashidat. Excellent. And I saw the penalty kick; that’s a very brave act, may God bless you,” the president stated.
Tinubu states that securing the 10th WAFCON title is no small achievement
Tinubu also mentioned that securing the highly esteemed African title for the tenth time in a row is no small achievement, urging the athletes to enjoy the win and maintain their health.
“Securing the 10th win isn’t a minor achievement for the nation and the continent as a whole. Very proud of you. Safe travels back home, have a great time, stay injury-free, may God bless you,” he added.
Before the game, the President dispatched a group to Rabat to express the government’s and Nigeria’s people’s complete backing and to encourage the team for success.
The team includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy,Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance,Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister for Women’s Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission,Shehu Dikko, among others.
The Super Falcons executed a remarkable recovery following a two-goal deficit in the first half, during which they were unsettled by Morocco’s intense pressure and rapid ball movement.

Nevertheless, the team adopted a new approach in the second half, dramatically changing the course of the match, beginning with a penalty successfully taken by AFC Toronto striker Okoronkwo.
Folashade Florence Ijamilusiconcluded a quick counter-attack by Okoronkwo to tie the game before the substitution,Jennifer Echegini, inserted the winner late in the match after a well-taken free-kick from the AFC Toronto forward.
