Carpenter Dies Mid-Dance at Favorite Band’s Concert

A Tragic Moment at a Grateful Dead Concert

Fred Cothard, a 54-year-old carpenter from Michigan, passed away unexpectedly while dancing with his girlfriend at a Grateful Dead concert in San Francisco. The incident occurred on Sunday during the band’s performance of “They Love Each Other.” Cothard was with his partner, Jody Leddy, who had traveled with him for ten days before the show, as the trip was planned prior to the concerts being announced.

Jody expressed her heartbreak on social media, sharing how she was by Fred’s side throughout the difficult time. She described holding him, talking about their children, and kissing him until the doctors pronounced him gone. She also mentioned contacting his daughter after the event.

The cause of Cothard’s death has not been disclosed yet. However, a concertgoer named Jill, a Marin resident, recounted the harrowing moment when Cothard collapsed. She described hearing shouts and seeing people waving their arms, with someone on another person’s shoulders frantically signaling. As she looked down about 15 feet away, she saw a lifeless man receiving chest compressions.

Thousands of fans, known as Deadheads, shared messages of condolence with Cothard’s family and friends as news of his passing spread through the community. Tina Nash Cothard, Fred’s wife, expressed gratitude for the support received from the Grateful Dead community, stating that the love and light from strangers helped them navigate this challenging time.

Cothard’s children created a GoFundMe page to help return their father home and lay him to rest. Sadie Cothard, Fred’s daughter, shared her grief on the fundraiser, highlighting her father’s incredible role as a parent and friend. She emphasized that Fred’s love for the Grateful Dead and its community was as deep as his love for his family.

The couple was attending the band’s 60th anniversary show when the tragedy occurred. Sadie reflected on how even though they were not there with him, they found comfort in knowing he was surrounded by thousands of fellow fans and the music he loved so much. She also mentioned that Cothard took his children to their first Grateful Dead show in 2016, where they were warmly welcomed into the community.

Cothard’s stepson shared his heartfelt tribute, expressing how his stepfather shaped his life. He admired his father’s work ethic and credited him for influencing his musical tastes. He added a touching note, suggesting that Jerry Garcia might have played Fred into the afterlife.

According to Cothard’s obituary, his greatest joy was exploring the world with his children and discovering new experiences. Most of his personal life revolved around music and his deep passion for the Grateful Dead. There was nothing he enjoyed more than traveling the country with family and friends to see the next show.

Fred Cothard’s legacy continues to live on through the memories he left behind and the impact he had on those who knew him. His story serves as a reminder of the profound connections formed through music and the unexpected moments that can change lives forever.
