Rory McIlroy’s New Home in Surrey
Rory McIlroy, one of the most celebrated golfers in the world, has recently become the proud owner of a luxurious mansion located in an exclusive English neighborhood. This area is known for housing some of the wealthiest individuals globally, including the Sultan of Brunei. The McIlroy family purchased their home within the expansive Wentworth estate in Surrey back in 2023. Since then, McIlroy has reportedly invested up to £9 million into renovating the property before moving in.
The golfer and his wife, Erica Stoll, along with their daughter Poppy, visited the house after winning the Masters in April to check on the progress of the renovations. Their previous residence was a lavish £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, which they acquired from golf legend Ernie Els in 2017. While that community was filled with Hollywood celebrities, tech moguls, and fellow golf professionals, none could match the prestige of their new neighbor—the Sultan of Brunei.
A Neighbourhood of High Society
The McIlroy residence is situated among several high-profile figures, including icons like Elton John and Cliff Richard. However, it’s the presence of the Sultan of Brunei, with a net worth of £22.3 billion, that truly elevates the status of the area. The Sultan, who is 79 years old, has been the 29th Sultan of Brunei since 1968 and is now recognized as the longest-serving monarch in the world following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022.
His primary residence is the Istana Nurul Iman, the largest palace in the world, featuring 1,788 rooms. In addition to being the prime minister of Brunei, he holds several other roles related to finance and defense. A qualified pilot, the Sultan is renowned for his extravagant lifestyle, owning approximately 500 Rolls-Royces and a total of 7,000 cars.
A Life of Extravagance
The Sultan is also known for his meticulous attention to personal grooming, reportedly spending £15,000 on a single haircut, with his barber traveling from London’s Dorchester Hotel for the occasion. His collection includes a private zoo with 30 Bengal tigers and various exotic birds. Entertainment is a significant part of his life, as evidenced by the rumored £12 million paid to the late Michael Jackson for a performance at his 50th birthday party, which reportedly lasted two weeks.
However, the Sultan’s reign has not been without controversy. His interpretation of Sharia law, which allowed for severe punishments such as whipping and stoning for those found guilty of adultery, homosexuality, and rape, led to international backlash. This resulted in a boycott of the luxury hotels owned by the Sultan, including the Dorchester in London and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Despite these challenges, the Sultan continues to maintain his opulent lifestyle, making him a fascinating figure in the world of high society.
