Female Student Killed by Boyfriend at Ondo University

A Tragic Murder Sparks Outrage and Protests at Adekunle Ajasin University

Less than three weeks after the brutal murder of two undergraduate students at Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) in Akungba-Akoko, another student has been reported killed by her boyfriend. The victim, Joy Adeyemi, a student from the Department of Human Kinetics, was found dead in her boyfriend’s room after going missing earlier in the week. Her body was discovered when neighbors noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment.

According to reports, Adeyemi was stabbed to death on Tuesday by her boyfriend, who is believed to be a local resident of the university community. After the incident, the suspect fled the area, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

A source close to the situation revealed that the alleged killer is an indigene of the town. “The deceased was killed by her boyfriend on Tuesday and locked inside his room,” the source said. “It was the neighbors who raised the alarm when they detected a bad odor from the room.”

The woman operated a point-of-sale (POS) business in the area, but she disappeared after Tuesday, leaving no one aware of her whereabouts until the foul smell prompted action. “The boy, after killing her, took the money she used for her POS business,” the source added.

This latest incident has sparked widespread anger and protests among AAUA students and members of the local community. Students took to the streets in the university town, carrying placards and chanting slogans such as “Stop killing us, AAUA students.” They demanded immediate intervention from state authorities and security agencies, expressing deep concern over the recurring incidents of violence targeting students.

Calls for Immediate Action and Accountability

The National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee (NANS) strongly condemned the recent killings and called for urgent action from security agencies. In a statement, the committee’s Chairman, Comrade Adekanye Adeboye, and Secretary, Oladele Emmanuel, expressed their dismay at the ongoing violence against students.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis is appalled and deeply saddened by the recent wave of killings targeting students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State,” the statement read. “While the student community is still grappling with the tragic loss of two students who were brutally killed in the university, another female student fell victim to this senseless violence just yesterday.”

The statement emphasized the need for immediate action from the Ondo State Government and security agencies. “The incessant killings are a clear indication of a security lapse that must be addressed urgently,” it continued. “In light of these tragic events, NANS issues a 24-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and all relevant security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of these crimes, implement robust security measures to prevent further attacks on students and ensure the safety and security of all students within the university and its environs.”

Failure to meet these demands within 24 hours would result in a nationwide peaceful protest, according to the statement. “We will mobilise all student structures across the country down to Ondo State and stage a massive peaceful protest until our demands are met.”

Police Response and Community Appeal

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident and stated that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the case. “We have arrested three suspects and we are making efforts to arrest other fleeing suspects while investigation is ongoing,” he said.

In response to the growing unrest, the Head of Media and Protocols of AAUA, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, urged students not to take the law into their own hands. “We are only appealing to the students not to take laws into their hand and they should allow the police to do thorough investigation and I’m sure justice would be served on the perpetrators,” he said.

A Growing Crisis

The recent murder of Joy Adeyemi has intensified concerns about the safety of students at AAUA. With multiple incidents of violence linked to local residents, the community is calling for stronger measures to protect students and restore peace. The situation highlights the urgent need for improved security and accountability from both the university administration and local authorities.

As the investigation continues, the voices of students and community members remain strong, demanding justice and long-term solutions to prevent further tragedies.
