Three years ago, Vincent Muli Kituku stood by his father’s bedside in a hospital that was ill-equipped to provide proper care. The experience left him devastated and determined to make a change. His father’s death marked the beginning of a mission that would eventually lead to the creation of a healthcare facility that serves thousands in Kangundo, Matungulu, and beyond.
Kituku’s journey began with a personal loss, but it quickly evolved into a broader vision for improving healthcare access in his community. After witnessing his father’s final days in a hospital lacking basic necessities such as gloves, medicine, and even clean water, he made a vow to transform the healthcare landscape in the area.
The Turning Point
In May 2022, Kituku visited Kangundo Level Four Hospital, not expecting the emotional impact it would have on him. What started as a routine visit turned into a moment of realization. He saw patients suffering due to inadequate resources and poor management. The hospital lacked essential medical supplies, and some patients were even detained because they couldn’t afford treatment.
“The hospital had no gloves, no saline, no IVs. Patients had to go to the local pharmacy to buy their own medicine and bring it back,” he recalled. “There was no food for inpatients, no water for flushing toilets, and no backup electricity.”
The lack of basic infrastructure was shocking. During a power outage, Kituku asked what would happen to patients relying on life-support systems. The response left him deeply disturbed.
Taking Action
Despite having no formal medical background, Kituku decided to take action. He cleared several patients’ bills, purchased food and medicine, and paid for the repair of a broken generator. He also bought a new washing machine and dryer to replace the broken ones.
This initial effort was just the start. Kituku began to think about the broader challenges faced by the community, especially the poor, students, and the elderly who could not afford better care elsewhere. He questioned how many others were dying silently due to lack of access to quality healthcare.
Launching the Ngoo Sya Wendo Healthcare Clinic
In June 2024, just over a year after his father’s passing, Kituku purchased a property with nine rooms along the Kangundo-Tala Road. On December 15, the Ngoo Sya Wendo Healthcare Clinic officially opened its doors. The clinic offers a wide range of services, including a pharmacy, dental care, X-ray, ultrasound, ortho trauma, minor surgery, and 24/7 ambulance services.
Kituku emphasized that the clinic is not driven by profit but by a desire to help people. Consultations are free, and treatment is affordable, with a focus on serving the elderly and students.
Challenges and Vision
Despite facing resistance from public health officers and financial hurdles, Kituku remained steadfast in his mission. Faith became his guiding force throughout the process. Looking ahead, he envisions expanding the clinic into a fully-fledged hospital with maternity wards, inpatient facilities, and more specialized care units.
“The best way to honor those who have left us is to live in a way that honors their lives,” he said. “That’s what this facility is—a tribute of love, born from pain, sustained by purpose.”
Innovation Beyond Healthcare
In addition to his work in healthcare, Kituku has also been inspired by other innovations in his community. For instance, a college student in Machakos has been making hair braids from sisal. This innovation addresses the needs of women who are allergic to synthetic hair, offering a natural and durable alternative.
The student, who is enrolled at Katine Technical Training Institute, believes that his creation can make a difference in the lives of many women. By using locally available materials, he is contributing to both sustainability and accessibility in the beauty industry.
