What This Man Said After the China Flood

A Devastating Flood in China

A severe flood that claimed the lives of at least 30 people in China has left many residents struggling to cope with the aftermath. Among those affected is a man named Pang, who managed to escape the disaster but lost some of his belongings. Unlike the victims, Pang was fortunate enough to survive, though he described the event as something that happens once in a hundred years.

Pang shared his experience with AFP, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the flood. He said, “It’s the kind of flood seen once in a hundred years.” His home was flooded, and he lost several items, including a refrigerator. He noted that previous years had never witnessed such extreme weather conditions.

Another resident, a local woman named Zhao, also spoke about the impact of the flood on her life. She described the chaos and destruction caused by the heavy rains. “It was a mess, the mud was this thick. My mother and I shovelled it, but we couldn’t get it out,” she said. Zhao and her mother had to leave their home and take shelter in a higher place. When they returned, they found their house completely flooded. “The refrigerator, washing machine and other things in the kitchen were all soaked. There was also this thick mud all over the kitchen,” she added.

The heavy rainfall that triggered the floods continued across Beijing and surrounding provinces. According to reports, the rain reached up to 543.4mm in some areas. This led to the evacuation of 80,322 people to safety. The situation was particularly dire in Beijing’s Miyun district, where 28 people lost their lives as of midnight on Monday. Another two deaths were reported in Yanqing district, bringing the total to 30.

Experts have pointed to the high volume of rainfall as the main cause of the flooding. Xuebin Zhang, a researcher from the University of Victoria in Canada and CEO of the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, explained that the amount of precipitation was extremely high. “The cumulative amount of precipitation has been extremely high—reaching 80–90% of the annual total in just a few days in some areas,” he said. Zhang emphasized that very few systems are designed to handle such an intense volume of rainfall over such a short period.

Impact on Communities

The flood not only caused loss of life but also significant damage to properties and infrastructure. Many families were forced to leave their homes, and the recovery process is expected to be long and challenging. Local authorities and emergency services have been working tirelessly to assist those affected and provide relief.

In addition to the events in China, another tragic incident occurred in Texas, where a father died while trying to save his children during a flood. John Burgess, a man from Kerr County, was staying at the Blue Oak RV Park when the flooding struck. Eyewitnesses reported that he was swept away by the flood while holding onto his two children. Lorena Guillen, the owner of the RV park, described the heartbreaking scene. “My husband was in the water trying to ask them, please throw me your baby! The man was holding tight to his babies, and he just got swept away,” she said.

These incidents highlight the devastating impact of natural disasters on communities and the urgent need for better preparedness and response strategies. As the world continues to face increasingly severe weather events, it is crucial to invest in resilient infrastructure and early warning systems to protect vulnerable populations.
