Kia EV4 Review: Luxurious Ride, Mixed Pros and Cons

A Comprehensive Look at the Kia EV4: Design, Performance, and Comfort

The Kia EV4 is a significant addition to the electric vehicle (EV) market, offering a blend of design innovation, performance, and comfort. This is the second time I’ve had the opportunity to test drive this model, following a two-hour session in April. The EV4 is a long-range variant equipped with an 81.4kWh NCM battery and comes with full-option specifications. Its factory price is set at 56.4 million won, but with the application of an electric vehicle tax benefit and a Seoul Metropolitan Government subsidy of 6.22 million won, the actual purchase price drops to 47.31 million won. With its battery and feature set comparable to other top-tier electric models, the EV4 competes closely with E-GMP-based 800V models.

Exterior Design: A Unique Identity

The test car was painted in snow white pearl, a color that stands out for its simplicity and popularity. It’s the only glossy option available, adding 80,000 won to the base price. The front design draws inspiration from the Kia K8, featuring a vertical lamp that gives it a distinct look compared to traditional sedans. The EV4 also has a long tail rear wheel overhang, which contributes to a more dynamic profile.

In terms of dimensions, the EV4 measures 4,730 mm in length, slightly shorter than the modern Avante by 20 mm. The height is 1,480 mm, thanks to the lower battery pack placement. The wheelbase stretches to 2,820 mm, which is 100 mm longer than the Avante. This design allows for a more spacious interior and contributes to a lower coefficient of air resistance—0.229 cd, the lowest among Kia models.

The rear design is particularly striking, with vertical lights on either end and unique spoilers that give it a futuristic feel. However, the absence of a “Tiger Face” grille makes the rear appear somewhat empty. Despite these nuances, the EV4 distinguishes itself from previous models like the EV3 through its bold exterior styling.

Interior Features: Comfort and Familiarity

Inside, the EV4 shares similarities with the EV3, though there are subtle differences in button layout and materials. The overall design is highly praised, making it a strong contender in the electric sedan category. The steering wheel features a polygonal shape, offering better visibility and grip. The seat position is lower than in the EV3, providing a more sedan-like driving experience.

The floor is higher due to the battery placement, but the seating feels comfortable. Headroom is slightly less than in the Hyundai Ioniq 6, and the second row may be uncomfortable for taller passengers. However, the legroom in both rows is impressive, especially in the second row, where the flat floor enhances space. The trunk is deep and wide, although the narrow opening can be inconvenient for loading bulky items.

Performance and Driving Experience

The EV4 is powered by a front-wheel motor producing 150 kW and 283 Nm of torque. While not the most powerful in the EV segment, its acceleration is smooth and responsive, making it suitable for everyday driving. The vehicle offers five driving modes—Echo, Normal, Sports, MyDrive, and Snow. Each mode adjusts the driving dynamics, with Echo being the most similar to internal combustion vehicles and Sports mode providing a more aggressive response.

The ride quality is one of the EV4’s standout features. The long wheelbase and well-tuned suspension ensure a smooth and comfortable ride, even on uneven roads. The braking system includes regenerative modes that allow for efficient energy recovery, though users should be cautious with the highest setting as it can cause motion sickness for passengers.

Long-Range Capabilities and Efficiency

With an 81.4kWh battery, the EV4 is certified for a range of 533 km on a single charge. Under optimal conditions, such as in spring or fall, the range could exceed 600 km. The EV4 also excels in efficiency, maintaining good performance even during harsh weather conditions.

Conclusion: A Comfort-Oriented Electric Sedan

The Kia EV4 is a well-rounded electric vehicle that prioritizes comfort and practicality. Its excellent ride quality, spacious interior, and user-friendly features make it an attractive choice for drivers who value comfort over sportiness. While it may lack the driving excitement of some competitors, it compensates with a refined and enjoyable driving experience.

Advantage: Excellent ride and best-in-class seats.

Disadvantage: Less sporty, rather boring driving sense. If you put the option in, you will see a higher model.
